Machine polishing and Gtechniq ceramic coatings on a Porsche 993 Targa
This Porsche 993 Targa in Ocean Blue came to our Wiltshire studio for our Enhancement Plus Detail with Gtechniq ceramic coatings. A dark metallic blue on an air-cooled 911 is a colour worth getting right: it is deep and full of flake when the paint is clean, and flat and grey the moment swirls get into it.
Wash and decontamination
The car was given a thorough wash followed by chemical and mechanical decontamination, so that everything bonded to the surface was off the paint before any polishing began. On a car of this age that step matters twice over: it stops embedded contamination being dragged across the panel, and it lets you see the true condition of the paint rather than a layer of fallout.
Two stages of machine polishing
The paintwork was then machine polished in two stages, cutting first to remove the swirls and sanding marks and refining afterwards to leave the finish sharp rather than hazy. The before and after halves in the gallery are the same panels under the same lighting. What comes back is the depth and the metallic flake that were always in the paint, not a temporary gloss sitting on top of it.
Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light, EXO and C5
With the correction signed off, the paintwork was sealed with Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light and topped with EXO, which adds gloss and a strongly water-repellent surface over the top of the base coating. The Cup wheels were removed and coated with Gtechniq C5 Wheel Armour, so brake dust sits on the surface instead of baking into the lacquer. Durability and the rest of the range are set out on our ceramic coating page.
